Flooding isn't the only threat brought about by the recent heavy rains. The oversaturated ground has also brought out record numbers of ants.
Johnson County Extension Agent Dan Lekie said he's never fielded as many ant calls as he has this year. And after a very wet spring, he's not surprised.
"So one of the things that's leading to the increase in calls is the amount of water into the soil," Lekie said. "The ants have to go some place, and they're finding ways into the homes because of that."
Exterminator James Hickey is getting those calls, too. He said 2008 is the busiest year in his 24 year career and he's now battling ants at 17-20 houses a day.
