The family was living under the radar in Baja, Mexico, after parents Richard Carelli and Michelle Pinkerton, both 38, fled San Francisco in January. The couple is wanted for the December murder of Leonard "Milo" Hoskins, 49.
Spring decided to undertake this adventure because wanted to do something memorable for his upcoming 40th birthday. Spring also spent several years in Baja, Mexico, so he was familiar with this region, where the family was rumored to be hiding. Spring crossed into Baja, Mexico on Sunday, then headed south, distributing fliers and frequenting Pemex gas stations, looking for leads.
Spring was able to track the family down in El Rosario on the west coast of Baja, and he alerted authorities. Police in both countries were able to work out the logistics and late Monday afternoon Mexican authorities raided the house where the family was staying, Spring said. With Carelli in cuffs, Pinkerton was given a few minutes to pack a duffle bag with items for the girls, and they all came back to the police station.
The girls were returned to their respective guardians on Tuesday night.
