ORLANDO, Fla. — More than 110 team members from Massey Services participated in the American Heart Association’s 2014 Greater Orlando Heart Walk on Sept. 6. The 5K walk was held on the University of Central Florida (UCF) campus. The Massey Services team, a proud sponsor of the walk for more than a decade, joined an estimated 18,000 Central Floridians to support the fight against heart disease.
Leading up to the walk, the Massey Services team collectively raised over $6,800 to be matched by the company to help in the fight against cardiovascular disease. In addition to raising money through contributions, team members’ fundraising efforts also included several raffles and “Wear Your Jeans to Work” days.
“I’m proud of our team members who helped raise money and provide support to bring attention to heart health,” said Ed Dougherty, Executive Vice President of operations and a member of the Heart Walk leadership team for the past four years. “One of our company’s core values is to give back to the community, and the Massey team participation in this event shows we are living that core value and are committed to helping in the fight against heart disease, the leading cause of death in the United States.”
Heart disease claims over 600,000 American lives each year, which equates to one in four deaths. The American Heart Association’s donation count immediately following the walk was $1.05 million.
