Massey Services Acquires Couhig Termite & Pest Control

Massey Services has entered the Louisiana market with the purchase of Couhig Termite & Pest Control, Baton Rouge, La.

MAITLAND, Fla. — Massey Services has entered the Louisiana market with purchase of Couhig Termite & Pest Control, a Baton Rouge, La.-based company.

 

Couhig provides general household pest, mosquito, and termite services to residential and commercial customers. Couhig has been serving the Baton Rouge area for more than 35 years. Founded by Bob Couhig Sr. in 1968, the family-run business with a commitment to customer satisfaction is currently led by his daughter, Owen Couhig Kemp. Founder Bob Couhig and Massey Services CEO Harvey Massey, have known and respected each other for more than 30 years.

About The Deal

  • Couhig has a total of 12 employees and one office. The company was owned by Robert (Bob) Couhig and has been managed by his daughter, Owen Couhig Kemp.
  • About 25 percent of Couhig’s total business is commercial. Half of its overall revenues are from its termite business, while the other half is general pest control and mosquito work.
  • The deal was finalized on Sept. 6, 2005.
  • Couhig was a good fit with Massey Services because Baton Rouge is experiencing fast growth and its large consumer segment reflects Massey’s target audience, according to Tony Massey.
  • Tony Massey said that Massey plans to introduce the Massey name to current customers immediately and co-brand the Couhig & Massey name in the community. Massey added that since Couhig has such solid name recognition in the Baton Rouge area, that Massey wants to continue leveraging their brand identity through a utilization of the Couhig and Massey name.
  • Tony Massey added that Massey Services will continue to pursue acquisition opportunities in Louisiana as well as expansion through external growth.

    Couhig is an active corporate citizen in Baton Rouge. The company reports annual revenue exceeding $1 million, a solid, diversified customer base, and 12 Team Members who will stay on with Massey Services.

    Massey Spokesperson Bud Brewer told PCT that Couhig subscribes to the same values and same philosophies as the Massey organization. “You don’t stay in business for (35-plus years) without doing great service and without knowing how to acquire and keep customers,” Brewer said. “Those are the attributes that Mr. (Harvey) Massey looks for. It’s much more important that a company be a cultural fit with us than an available acquisition.”

     

    Brewer added that Massey Services has “flirted” with entering Louisiana in year’s past, but hadn’t found the right opportunity. Harvey Massey is from Melville, La., which is about 47 miles from Baton Rouge.
