ORLANDO, Fla. — Massey Services announces the opening of the Massey Services Insect Zoo, located in the new Wayne M. Densch Discovery Center.

This exhibit has been in the planning stages for years, under construction for over ten months and opened on Oct. 18 with a special ribbon cutting and press reception. Almost 99% of all species on earth are invertebrates, or animals without backbones. This amazing world is on display at the Massey Services Insect Zoo.

This new exhibit gallery will feature fascinating walking sticks from Australia, along with some incredible Florida species such as praying mantis’s and colorful lubber grasshoppers. Others on display include tarantulas, centipedes, scorpions and giant snails. A working beehive will allow guests to watch bees busy at work making honey. A touch screen computer will test guests’ knowledge of a varity of insects. Mounted specimens from all over the world will provide insight into the diversity of these phenomenal creatures. Hands-on puzzles, puppets, books, magnifying glasses and more will help children discover the world of the tiny, but mighty, invertebrates.

Although insects are often feared or disliked by humans, their value to the functioning of our planet cannot be overlooked. In the words of biologist Edward O. Wilson, “If all mankind were to disappear, the world would regenerate back to the rich state of equilibrium that existed ten thousand years ago. If insects were to vanish, the environment would collapse into chaos.”

The Massey Services Insect Zoo has been made possible by a generous donation from Massey Services, Inc. In addition, donations of specimens and expertise are being provided by the McGuire Center for Lepidoptera Research, the Florida State Plant and Apiary Division, Beekeeper Michael Housel, and the Department of Environmental Protection.

The Zoo is open daily from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. and located at 3755 NW Highway 17-92 in Sanford. For more information, please call 407-323-4450.
