Dr. Robert Suranyi, entomologist at McLaughlin Gormley King Company (MGK), reports that a recently completed lab trial shows that Bedlam reduces bed bug egg hatch by almost 90 percent. Only 12 percent of bed bug eggs treated with Bedlam hatched, compared to a 97 percent hatch rate of bed bug eggs treated with a placebo aerosol, the company reports.
"The trial showed that spraying Bedlam on a bed bug infestation will provide an additional benefit of killing eggs that are present in target areas," Suranyi says. "This ovicidal effect is an important benefit for the pest control industry because now pest control professionals have an aerosol treatment that can be used on sensitive areas (mattresses, couches, etc.) to kill both immature and adult bed bugs, as well as their unseen eggs."
Suranyi says chemical control is just one component of the overall program to control bed bugs. "Due to the cryptic nature of the target pest, we recommend a lot of elbow grease (multiple thorough inspections, tenant education, non-chemical and chemical methods such as Bedlam) to successfully tackle bed bug infestations."
Introduced in 2006, Bedlam is an aerosol formulation that provides quick knockdown and kill of bed bugs (85 percent knockdown in the first 60 seconds following application) with residual control that can last up to seven weeks (depending on use-rate and application surface), according to MGK.
Bedlam can be used wherever bed bugs travel and hide — from mattresses, box springs, fabric, to furniture and pet areas. For treatment sites that are hard to access, an extension tube can be attached to the nozzle to apply in cracks and crevices, bed frames, headboards, baseboards and other potential bed bug harborage sites. And this non-irritating, water-based formula will not stain water-safe fabrics and surfaces, MGK reports.
Along with bed bugs, Bedlam also controls lice, dust mites, fleas and ticks. It is available in 17 oz. aerosol cans, six per case.
