LEWISTON — Weary of the rodents chewing up holiday lights, the city of Lewiston authorized installation of an electrical zapper to keep squirrels off the 55-foot spruce.
As reported in the Sun Journal, Colton Tlumac of Modern Pest Services spearheaded efforts to protect the tree, donating time and materials for the system that discourages squirrels from chewing on the $3,500 LED Christmas lights on the tree in Kennedy Park.
On Tuesday, Modern installed the nearly $1,000 Tree-Shock System by Bird Barrier the Sun Journal reported. Tlumac said it's typically used to discourage birds such as grackles from roosting in trees when homeowners complain they're making too much noise or too much mess.
Tlumac decided to help out after the squirrels caused city workers to take down the lights just days after the Dec. 3 tree lighting.
