BOSTON - State public health officials yesterday confirmed that a 23-year-old Acushnet man has become the second Massachusetts resident this year to be infected with Eastern equine encephalitis, the Boston Globe reports.
Public health officials also said that the virus was detected in bird-biting mosquitoes in Dennis, the first time the virus has ever been found on Cape Cod. Officials said they are considering more pesticide spraying to stop the spread of the virus.
``At this time there are no plans for aerial spraying on the Cape because the risk is not as high as in Bristol and Plymouth counties, but we'll continue to monitor the situation," said Donna Rheaume, spokeswoman for the Department of Public Health.
Derek Ashworth was admitted to Boston Medical Center on Saturday and was listed yesterday in critical condition, said Maria Pantages, a hospital spokeswoman who confirmed he had the virus.
