SAN DIEGO — County Vector Control officials have confirmed that one harvest mouse trapped during routine monitoring in the San Luis Rey River area near Bonsall has tested positive for Hantavirus.
This is the fourth mouse detected with the disease this year.
“Hantavirus is a rare but sometimes fatal disease,” said Gary Erbeck, Director of the County Department of Environmental Health. “People contract the disease by inhaling the virus, often when they are cleaning up rodent droppings and nesting materials.”
Vector Control staff will conduct more testing in the area to determine the extent of the virus.
