HONOLULU — Nan-Yao Su, the "father" of termite baiting, will be honored by the University of Hawai'i's College of Tropical Agriculture and Human Resources as its 2007 Outstanding Alumnus.
A native of Taiwan, Su began studying subterranean termites as a graduate student at the University of Hawai'i. After receiving his doctorate in 1982, his groundbreaking research led to the development of what became the Sentricon® Termite Colony Elimination System, the first termite baiting system.
Manufactured by Dow AgroSciences, the Sentricon System has protected more than 2 million structures, and is the only termite control product to receive the Presidential Green Chemistry Challenge Award, one of the U.S. government's top environmental honors. Currently Su is a professor of entomology at the University of Florida.
Su will be honored in a 5:30 p.m. ceremony Thursday at the Hilton Hawaiian Village Coral Ballroom.
