Included in this month’s Rearview, is an update on North Carolina State University’s work with robotic cockroaches. N.C. State researchers have developed a combination of software and hardware that will allow them to use unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) and insect cyborgs, or biobots, to map large, unfamiliar areas — such as collapsed buildings after a disaster. One of the experiments they’ve done involves using Hexbugs which illustrates NCSU’s dynamic topological mapping approach by herding a swarm of agents.
