While the U.S. encompasses many different climates and environments, specific pests are more common in some areas than others.
Forbes research shows that spiders are the most common pest in the U.S., with "problematic presences" found in 12 states. Carpenter ants ranked second, seen in nine states. Termites are common in seven states, as are cockroaches.
The least common is the scorpion, in part due to its limited range. There are approximately 70 species of scorpions living in the U.S., according to Forbes, but only one, the bark scorpion, is dangerous to humans.
Scorpions live in dry, hot areas, so they may also be found around those same pipes while trying to cool off. Also hiding under objects like logs, stones and bricks, but can be found in shoes, towels and clothing left outside overnight.
