On a personal level, the Lloyd family plants an oak tree to offset carbon emissions for each of their frequent international trips. Lloyd is also a strong advocate of using a rain barrel system to collect rainwater for his gardens and lawn. The Lloyds even use their whole house fan instead of air conditioning as much as possible, but when they do use the AC, it is never set below 78 degrees – and even in winter, the heat is never set higher than 68. The family’s recycling efforts are also legendary, collecting as much as 100 pounds every two weeks.
But Lloyd’s favorite green activity is commuting to work via water. By car, he navigates a winding 30-minute 18-mile land route around the Tennessee River to his office at Nisus. However, since he lives near the river and can get to Nisus by water, Lloyd found he can easily cut his trip to a mere 4.5 miles. If he kayaks, the trip takes an hour. In a rowing shell (provided he doesn’t get lost in the fog), he spends 45 minutes. But the most practical and sustainable method is literally riding the “green” waves of the river on his low emission, high gas mileage Waverunner®, cutting the trip to only 8 minutes. Lloyd calculates that when he commutes by car, it means a weekly fill-up for $60 (at this writing), but the Waverunner only needs a biweekly fill-up for half the cost, saving a whopping 75 percent of the expense of driving a car. So whenever the weather permits – which happens a lot in Tennessee – Lloyd can be found starting and ending his day with a gas-saving relaxing trip on the water. Does going green get any better?
Understandably, Lloyd has been a force behind Nisus Corporation’s own green movement. As a manufacturer of earth-friendly pest control products, Nisus has a commitment to converting its day-to-day operations to green practices. Some of their recent efforts include:
• Changing all the lights in the manufacturing plant to more energy efficient units.
• Moving to a 4-day workweek in the manufacturing facility.
• Changing non-recycled product packaging to more environmentally friendly recycled cardboard boxes.
• Using recycled cardboard for all products that are packaged in boxes.
• Using recycled or recyclable materials in all product packaging.
• Replacing packing material with dissolvable packaging peanuts.
• Recycling soda cans and other personal-use items at the workplace.
