ROCKFORD, Tenn. — Harry Bryan, vice president of Business Development for Nisus Corp., competes on the very popular barbecue competition circuit. He mixes his love of cooking with business to forge lasting relationships with clients.
Bryan has pulled his 5,500 pound “twin torpedo” BBQ rig as far as Orlando for the International Builders Show, where Nisus, along with Reed Business, sponsored a “cook” as part of the Show Village. Over two days Bryan and the Nisus team fed approximately 1,200 people his brisket and secret-recipe, award-winning ribs. He also did a cook with Lee Barrett, Nisus Western Division Manager in Texas at the 95,000 acre DR Horton ranch. DR Horton is one of the largest home builders in the country. Bryan also appeared on the PBS show, This Old House® cooking up his ribs and brisket as part of a Nisus Bora-Care® termite treatment.
Bryan routinely competes in competitions from all over the southeast. His barbecue team, named Q-WE-DO, recently competed in Rockingham, NC and took home 4th place honors in ribs among 65 professional teams. This past October, he was crowned the Tennessee Grand Champion and has qualified for the American Royal BBQ Cook-off to be held in Kansas City later this year. In addition to competitions and appearances at trade shows, Bryan often serves up his barbecue for clients as a way to show appreciation and solidify existing and budding relationships.
“Many people may take customers to go play golf and that's all fine and good, but I’d rather share my passion of cooking and BBQ. It's quite amazing how receptive your customer and your prospects are to your company’s over a platter of ribs. BBQ helps you appreciate the little things in life by drawing comparisons between good BBQ, business and life in general. If your day is crappy, nothing beats a plate of good BBQ to reconcile the loss. If the day is fantastic, nothing beats a great cold soda and a plate of good BBQ to celebrate the gain. Business and BBQ go together...the process for success in either is similar,” says Bryan.
On Good Friday, April 14, Bryan will be serving smoked chicken and ribs at a seminar hosted by Forshaw Distribution in Charlotte, N.C. “Our seminars are thought-provoking, interesting and fun, but I wanted to take it to another level. This is one way we can show our appreciation to our distribution partners as well as our clientele,” says Bryan.
Bryan has been cooking since his teens and has competed for 3 years on the BBQ circuit. His success jumpstarted his BBQ catering company and will be working toward marketing his rubs and sauces in the near future.
