Nisus Helps to Fight Giant Snails in Florida

ROCKFORD, Tenn. - Nisus Corporation's Niban Granular Bait is one tool Florida PMPs can use for the control of giant African land snails and other common pests, Nisus announced.

Eighteen months after a Miami-Dade Country outbreak, the giant African land snail is spreading rapidly, Nisus reports. One giant snail can produce 100 eggs per month, live for more than eight years and grow to more than six inches in shell size. The snails can carry disease and are a danger to crops, as they consume at least 500 different kinds of plants. The pests also threaten structures while munching on stucco and concrete in search of dietary calcium, Nisus said.

Niban is attractive to these problematic pests, and features a borate mineral salt as its active ingredient, combined with an irresistable bait made from corn cob granules mixed with oils, interfering with their metabolic ability to break down sugars to extract energy from their food.

The Florida Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services has done extensive research on the eradication of the giant African land snail, and has identified a number of ways to eliminate it, Nisus said. More information can be found at freshfromflorida.com. 

Niban is a weatherized bait that remains effective in heat, sunlight and four inches of rain, so it keeps working even in Florida’s climate. Florida DACS recommends an “application rate of 3.2 ounces (2/3 cup) to 6 ounces of granules per 100 square feet. The bait can be reapplied every four to six weeks, as needed.”
