TIPP CITY, Ohio – After successfully growing a pair of lawn care businesses — Turf Point and Eco Turf — in the Dayton, Ohio, area, owners Kyle and Kris Holden were ready for their next challenge. The Holdens sold both businesses last year and set out on their next venture – owning and operating a pest control business. In August 2020, the Holdens launched Essential Pest Control, a full-service pest control company serving the Dayton, Columbus and Cincinnati markets.
Why pest control? “We decided to get into pest control because we offered basic perimeter pest control with our lawn service and we saw the need,” said Kyle Holden. “We also knew that we could put together a better service plan for pest control than our competition with a competitive price. We had always offered great solutions for outside the home – this gave us a chance to get inside of customer homes to handle more and bigger pest issues.”
Essential Pest Control is growing via the use of social media, Google/Internet marketing, direct mail, and door-to-door sales. These are strategies similar to those used by the Holdens used to grow their lawn service business from 0 to 14,000 customer in 4-plus years. Since it was founded one year ago, Essential Pest Control has grown to employ 15 workers, servicing 2,000 customers with more than $1 million in recurring revenue.
“We believe we’ve been successful because of our sales and sales training, and the multiple marketing tactics we use,” Holden said. “We also believe in recruiting every day to keep a top-notch staff. Team is everything to us.”
Future plans for the Holdens are to expand Essential Pest Control to multiple states, as well as opening more lawn treatment businesses. As they build their businesses, the Holdens plan on growing their non-profit Fostering Ohio, which assists foster children after emancipation and families in need. This outreach “is important to us because we grew up in foster care ourselves and know how hard it can be growing up without parents and starting life on your own,” Holden said.
