R. Dana Pest Control Introduces DANA K-9 Scent Detection

West Haverstraw, N.Y. – DANA K-9 Scent Detection, a new division of R. Dana Pest Control in West Haverstraw, N.Y., has “unleashed” its bed bug-sniffing canines Walter and Lucy. Walter and Lucy graduated from Action K-9 Academy in Manistee, Mich., and have been trained in sniffing live bed bugs and their eggs; they will not alert to dead bed bugs, the company reports.

Walter is a 24-pound “puggle,” or beagle and pug mix, while Lucy is a 45-pound border collie-chocolate lab mix. “Walter and Lucy can access areas faster than people, detect bed bugs in places people can’t reach and pin point areas that may have been missed by other types of inspections cutting down the amount of traditional treatments that may be needed, or not needed,” said Richard “Rick” Effaldana, owner, team leader and trainer for Dana K9 Scent Detection.

Canine inspectors are rated above 90 percent in accuracy, about 300 percent more than a visual inspection, the pest control company reports. This type of inspection allows the pest control operator performing the treatment a better chance of resolving the infestation by applying the correct treatment in only the areas needed.

“A typical visual inspection of a hotel room, if performed properly, should take at least an hour or more,” said Effaldana. “But Walter and Lucy can do the inspection in about two minutes with an accuracy rate of about 96 percent.”
