Pest Control Companies Team with Dow to Preserve Local Boy Scouts HQ

The crews of Able Exterminators, Discount Fumigation, and Best Care Fumigation celebrate completing a successful fumigation job donated to the Boy Scouts of America Santa Clara County. Dow AgroSciences also donated the Vikane gas fumigant used during the fumigation of the headquarters. The donation saved the Boy Scouts about $7,000.

SAN JOSE, Calif. — The Santa Clara County Council of the Boy Scouts of America was recently faced with a new challenge from Mother Nature, and it didn’t involve the typical challenges of learning how to make a fire without using matches, nor navigating through the woods with nothing but a compass. Drywood termites infested its headquarters, so local fumigation experts used whole-structure fumigation with Vikane® gas fumigant to eliminate the pests.

After staff noticed damage and frass in a restroom, they called Able Exterminating to complete an inspection. The inspector discovered that a 40-foot wood beam running through the extent of the structure was infested with drywood termites and realized that the termite problem went beyond what he could see. As such, he recommended fumigation with Vikane® gas fumigant to ensure that all of the pests would be eliminated.

The fumigation was donated through the generosity of a few local companies, the Pest Control Operators of California (PCOC) and Dow AgroSciences. Able Exterminating donated the termite inspection. Discount Fumigation and Best Care Fumigation donated the labor necessary to complete the job. And Dow AgroSciences joined the effort by donating Vikane® gas fumigant, which was used to eliminate the termites during the fumigation.

“As a member of the PCOC, we are always looking for ways to give back to the community,” said Ed Ackermann, supervising inspector at Able Exterminating. “The Boy Scouts of Santa Clara County represent a large population in this area that are constantly volunteering and giving back. They definitely deserve the support of local companies and can now be assured that their termite problem has been successfully treated.”

The council serves almost all of Santa Clara County, involving more than 11,500 young people in more than 400 packs, troops and crews. Some 350 businesses, churches, schools and other area organizations sponsor one or more of the Boy Scout packs or posts.

“The generosity of Able Exterminating, Best Care Fumigation, Discount Fumigation and Dow AgroSciences saved the Boy Scouts about $7,000, which amounts to the money needed to support about 35 boy scouts next year,” said Walter Mueller, development director of the Santa Clara County Boy Scouts. “Termites have been an unexpected challenge this year, and it was a huge relief to receive help from these local companies.”
