Professional Women In Pest Management Update

A look at some of the recent activities from the Professional Women in Pest Management association.

PWIPM Educational Fund-Announces Winner of a Tiffany's butterfly pendant. The Professional Women in Pest Management stood out at PestWorld 2004 in Hawaii, wearing their new logo pink shirts and selling raffle tickets for the PWIPM Educational Fund, with the chance of winning the beloved blue box, enclosed a sterling silver & 18k gold butterfly pendant from Tiffany's, donated by BASF. At PestWorld 2004, PWIPM raised $3,500.

Connie Thornton of Lester Humphrey Pest Control was announced the winner at the Eastern Conference on Jan. 20, and she will be presented the jewelry at the Southwestern Conference on Jan. 31. Thornton has been with Lester Humphrey for eight years and has learned a lot about the pest management business from her positions, which have included customer service representative, receptionist, scheduler and staff coordinator. She currently serves as administrative assistant, handling human resources and accounting for the company.

PWIPM partners with Nisus on Scholarship for 2005. PWIPM and Nisus have partnered in continuing Nisus Corporations' Annual $2,500 Scholarship. The scholarship is for female graduate students interested in a career in the pest control industry. Awardees will have displayed research, experience or a strong interest in urban entomology or some other related facet of pest control. The scholarship includes a stipend and registration to assist the awarded in attending the NPMA Annual Convention in Nashville where they will be awarded the scholarship. PWIPM Launches Web Site. One of the agenda items given to the Council was to develop a Web site through www.pestworld.org to feature PWIPM activities and articles applicable to professional women in the industry. The Council reports that the Web site will be live by mid-February. At the time of the launch, the site will include a basic framework that will allow PWIPM to communicate with NPMA, the PWIPM Council and highlights of PWIPM, including articles, interviews, and more. If you are interested in contributing to the Web site or have information you would like posted, contact PWIPM staff liaison, Dominique Stumpf at dstumpf@pestworld.org. Once the site is live, members will receive an email. At this time, the site will only be available on the members only home page.
