MEMPHIS, Tenn. – Thousands flocked to West Lafayette, Ind., April 8 -9 to spit crickets, taste chocolate-covered insects and cheer on cockroaches at “Roachill Downs” during Purdue University’s 16th Annual Bug Bowl.
The event, which featured Terminix as the lead sponsor, was part of the university’s Spring Fest. Bug Bowl annually hosts more than 30,000 spectators and is the largest known insect event of its kind.
“There aren’t many places where you can pet a hissing cockroach and be crowned the champion of a cricket-spitting contest all in the same day, but that’s what makes Bug Bowl so unique.” said Steve Good Terminix vice president and chief marketing officer. “The event is a combination of entertainment and education, and Purdue’s entomology department does a phenomenal job presenting both in an atmosphere that is enjoyable for everyone in the family.”
Bug Bowl featured more than 15 exhibits and demonstrations during the two-day extravaganza. Some of the events included:
- Cricket spitting
- Insect petting zoo
- Roach races
- Insects as food culinary demonstrations
- Live butterfly exhibit
- Insect crafts and face painting
The 2006 event marked the second consecutive year that Terminix served as the lead sponsor for Bug Bowl.
