CLEVELAND – One-third (33 percent) of those who responded to a recent PCT Reader Poll indicated they use social media influencers, a surprisingly high number considering this form of marketing is in its infancy.

When Travis Bottoms and Erick Estrada launched Polite Pest Co., Mesa, Ariz., in 2020, they made hyperlocal influencer marketing their first marketing tactic. The company currently partners with 107 social media influencers who live predominantly in the Mesa, Ariz., area who promote Polite Pest when a technician arrives at a residential service through posting on their feed, Instagram stories and partnering with the company on video reels. Another company that has “gone big” with social media marketing is Get Goins Pest Control, Los Angeles, whose owners Rian and Noelle Goins created digital content for their business pages to start building their own customer relationships.

Noelle said you have to be ready at all times for content opportunities.  “As much as people love to see the gross side of bugs, there are also moments where we see bugs in real time like a worm slithering by my bait station,” Noelle said. “I think adding the pest control element into creating content adds a whole new level.”

Rian said from what he’s seen in the industry, many pest control companies have not leveraged the opportunity to use social media to promote their services and reach a larger audience. “The digital age is where we are at, everything is on the phone,” he said. “It feels natural to always be creating content and we respect people’s privacy which is important.”

Although one-third of respondents indicated they are using social media influencers two-thirds (67 percent) said they are not.
