Sandwich Isle Assists in Protecting Historic Solar Airplane

The Hawaii-based company designed and fabricated a bird-proof net enclosure to protect the solar-powered aircraft Solarimpulse and its highly sensitive components.

OAHU, Hawaii — Sandwich Isle Pest Solutions was asked to design and fabricate a bird proof net enclosure to protect the solar powered aircraft Solarimpulse and its highly sensitive components while it is docked in Hawaii for up to 8 months awaiting repairs to its damaged batteries. The major goal of this project was to keep birds from nesting or defecating onto this highly technical, highly sensitive aircraft. The five sided net enclosure measured 250 ft. x 100 ft. x 40 ft. with access points for maintenance personnel. When completed, over 53,000 sq. ft. of specialized bird netting was used in its production; making it the largest undertaking of its kind to date for the pest control company.

Michael Botha, president of Sandwich Isle Pest solutions, stated, “This very large and technically challenging job needed to be squeezed into our July schedule, which coincidentally was also Sandwich Isle Pest Solutions busiest month in 18 years! Usually a job of this size requires weeks or even months of planning, however, with fantastic support from BirdBarrier based out of California, and United Bird Control based in Arizona, we were able to get all the materials, components and help necessary to complete the job two days ahead of the deadline.”

In accomplishing this unprecedented feat, Sandwich Isle Pest Solutions had only 7 days to design, propose, and complete the project. Materials had to be special ordered; and in some cases they had to be custom made and shipped overnight. The dedicated staff worked extra-long days – nonstop until the project was completed.
