In the following podcast, PCT interviewed Dr. Coby Schal, entomologist at North Carolina State University and a co-author of a study published Thursday in the journal Science that sheds new light on cockroaches and glucose aversion, a phenomenon observed more than 20 years ago by N.C. State researcher Dr. Jules Silverman.
The new study looks at how genetic mutation has given some roaches a competitive advantage that has enabled them to survive and multiply. It explains that the key to cockroach glucose aversion is an altered behavior of certain nerves that signal the brain about foods.
