Sauvage, who became familiar with Purdue three years ago via online correspondence courses, wanted to find out more about how his U.S. colleagues perform pest control and also to share his challenges and successes.
In addition to South Africa, Scientific Pest Control Services does work in the countries of Namibia, Botswana, Australia and Mauritius. Because it is servicing a wide variety accounts and dealing with multiple regulations, Scientific offers both traditional and non-traditional services. “We have an entirely different way of doing things,” Sauvage told PCT.

For example, the company has a training division, called Ecoscience that carries out pest control and food safety evaluations of food industries in Namibia, Mauritius and South Africa. According to the company’s Web site: “These evaluations are presented in a report which highlights findings as well as suggests probable solutions. Ecoscience trains governmental inspectors (ACT 36/1947), private persons wishing to open pest control companies outside and a wide spectrum of personnel form the food industry in the Sub-Saharan Africa.”
The company also offers an entomological, hygiene training and consulting program to the food and pharmaceutical industry specializing in pest control and hygiene related aspects. The auditing and training standards that are going to be set are based on the AIB standards and fall within the guidelines set by FDA, EPA and the EC Union.
Scientific Pest Control Services has 48 employees and operates out of two offices in Johannesburg and one office in Durban, South Africa. Sauvage has been with the company for 16 years and has served in his current position for three years. In addition to his on-the-job contributions, Sauvage has been one of South Africa’s top pest management ambassadors. In fact, the Australian version of Maxim magazine once did an article on Sauvage in which he re-told some of his more interesting pest control experiences.
While at Purdue, Sauvage took in the Purdue-Ohio State men's basketball game. He added that he is interested in returning to Purdue next year to give a presentation on pest management in South Africa.
