CLEVELAND – With the spring season about halfway complete, PCT polled our readers about how busy they have been this spring, in comparison to typical spring seasons. More than half of those who responded to PCT’s recent poll said they are significantly busier (27 percent) or slightly busier (26 percent) than typical springs.
Jeff King, president of The Pest Rangers, Hanover Twp., Pa., said revenue is up 26 percent this year, with the company’s HPPs (Home Service Plans) signups up 60 percent.
“We have noticed an increase all around due to the mild weather and winter we experienced. We hope the trend continues throughout the season,” he said.
In Mississippi, Bruno Milanese, president of Bay Pest Control, Gulf Hills, Miss., said his company has been slightly busier. “Weather is just starting to stay warm and insects starting to move,” he said.
Twenty-five percent of those who responded to the poll said this spring has been “about average.” Dan Rottler, president of Rottler Pest Solutions, St. Louis, Mo., said the company’s performance has been “fairly typical,” considering prevailing weather conditions in the Midwest. “We experienced a strong first quarter, and are now simply anticipating a shift in the weather,” he said. “Consistent warmth and rainfall are essential for further progress."
Weather also was cited as a reason for companies having a “slower than typical spring season” which was cited by 22 percent of respondents.
Sam Tutton, president of EcoSkan Pest Solutions, Redlands, Calif., said California’s higher than normal rain and snow this year have hampered business. “Also, the Santa Ana winds have hampered our bird work many times,” he said. “Having spoken with many forthright owners and tehcnicians in Southern California, many companies were experiencing a downturn in business through March. This seems to have been rectified the last few weeks.”
