This year’s event honored the memory of Charlie Hromada of Terminix International, who lost a courageous battle to cancer in February of 2008. The tournament also celebrated the lives of cancer survivors, Jill Brierley, wife of Casey Brierley, vice president and regional manager for Target Specialty Products, and Reed Yenny, golf course superintendent of Hillcrest Country Club in Los Angeles, California. At the evening banquet following the tournament, Steve Diaz of Paragon talked about Hromada’s positive spirit and sense of humor during his fight. Brierley and Yenny also shared their personal stories.
Jayne Lastusky, vice president of the American Cancer Society’s Los Angeles region, delivered a message of progress at the evening banquet and reminded guests that events like the tournament help the society fund more cancer research than any other U.S. charity. The American Cancer Society has a legacy of funding promising researchers over the years, and 42 of these researchers have gone on to win the Nobel Prize.
The tournament’s Malcolm Stack Award went to Bryan Houtchens, Chad Powell and Steve Sellers of Team Too. Named in honor of the late Malcolm Stack, president and founder of Bell Laboratories Inc., the award goes to the foursome with the low gross. Houtchens, Powell and Sellers generously donated their winnings back to the American Cancer Society.
Target’s Charity Golf Tournament has raised over $345,000 for the American Cancer Society since it began in 2000. Platinum sponsors for this year’s event included Bell Laboratories Inc., Paragon and Syngenta.
