COLUMBIA, S.C. – As an unseasonably warm winter continues in the Southeast, the pest professionals at Terminix Service, are sharing four simple steps that everyone can take to reduce the risk of pest infestation.
“As fluctuating winter temperatures keep away many insects, unsealed entries and limited food sources lead to a much higher risk of rodents, carpet beetles and clothes moths,” said Kevin Hathorne, technical director at Terminix Service. “By executing these tips, homeowners can usually save money on home repairs while keeping their residence secure. With warm winter temperatures, we can also anticipate a more active spring and summer for insects like mosquitoes, wasps and fleas.”
Pest prevention tips for winter include:
1) Clean and tightly seal warm weather clothes before storing to reduce the risk of carpet beetles. Use plastic bins with tight fitting, sealed lids and be sure to thoroughly clean everything stored. Sealing dry pet food and bird seed will also reduce the chance of rodents.
2) Have throw rugs periodically dry cleaned or washed according to label directions. Accumulated pet hair attracts carpet beetles, so vacuum around furniture and beds often.
3) Install a thick weather-strip on the bottom of all doors. Any holes or cracks larger than ¼ of an inch should be stuffed with steel wool or wire mesh before sealing with caulk or foam to prevent rodents and small insects from chewing through.
4) Keep firewood stored as far from the home as possible and store off the ground to reduce the risk of Norway rats. During the winter, store only enough wood to burn every couple of days and remove any piles of nearby debris, leaves, bricks or stones.
