LYNCHBURG, Va. — Virginia Exterminating Company, a third-generation pest control company, commemorated its 60th anniversary in October.
On Oct. 10, 1947, Frank W. Brown began the company as Lynchburg Exterminating Company with the motto: “A maximum of service with a minimum of publicity.” When he died on Oct. 23, 1969, Frank’s oldest son, C. Rudy Brown, changed the company name and took over management until he retired in 1993.
Frank’s oldest grandson and Rudy’s nephew H. Louis Gallaher Jr. assumed control of the company in 1993 and is still solving clients’ problems faithfully today.

Thanks to the company’s program of thorough training, several former employees of Virginia Exterminating Company have gone on to form companies of their own, notably Norman Brown of NAB Exterminating Company and Norman Brown Inspections, Lynchburg; Tommy Cyrus of Cyrus Pest Control, Appomattox; Gene Goodman (deceased) of Goodman Exterminating Company, Madison Heights; and George Long (deceased) of Long’s Termite and Pest Control.
Continuing the company’s successful tradition, Gallaher recently scored the highest grade on a Residex pest control test administered to approximately 350 Virginia pest professionals.

“We are a relatively small company, catering to an elite group of clients who respect our honesty and willingness to think outside the box,” Gallaher said. “We actually discourage some prospective customers by explaining to them that in some cases they can solve their own problems without an exterminator.”
