Western’s Barbara Hunter Recognized by Chilean Exporters Association

PARSIPPANY, N.J. — Barbara Hunter, director of Imported Commodities for Western Fumigation, a division of Western Industries – North, received the Award of Recognition from the Chilean Exporters Association.

Hunter was presented this unique honor by Ronald Bown, president of the Chilean Exporters Association. It cites Barbara’s “valuable contribution in the development of the fresh produce industry.” The event took place at the Chilean Fresh Fruit Association reception, held at the Fernbank Museum during the Produce Marketing Association (PMA) Conference, which took place in Atlanta.

Hunter’s involvement in the Chilean fruit business spans 27 years. She was one of the first recipients of the prestigious, “Friend of Chile Award” presented by the Chilean American Chamber of Commerce in 2000.

Hunter is well known in the industry for her proactive participation in issues of importance in the port and has been recognized in the past with the Women’s International Trade Association (WITA) “Outstanding Achievement Award”; the “Cocoa Award” in 1997 by the Ports of Philadelphia & Camden (PPC), for technical and informational support to the cocoa industry; and in 2002 she was given the “Make a Difference Award” for exemplary volunteerism. It was presented by the Center for Hope Hospice, a non-profit organization, in New Jersey.

Hunter is active in many port organizations including The Maritime Exchange for the Delaware River and Bay, where she is a member of the executive committee and board; The Seaman’s Church and The Chapel of Four Chaplains. She was invited to speak at the Women’s International Trade Association dinner meeting, as part of a panel discussion. The discussion focused on women in the international trade industry who have reached levels of recognition within their company and industry.

Hunter has been with Western since 1975 and has worked with the Delaware River Ports since 1979. Western Fumigation provides port of entry USDA and FDA quarantine treatments to meet US entry requirements for imports and exports. Western has been serving the Eastern United States since 1928.
