Yankee Pest Control Providing Rodent Relief During Boston Trash Strike

MALDEN, Mass. — To alleviate the rodent pressure Boston residents are facing from the latest Republic Services trash strike, Yankee Pest Control announced it is offering free rodent control services for 16 Eastern Massachusetts communities at any temporary municipal trash collection site.

Four hundred trash collection workers went on strike July 1, demanding higher wages, better benefits and improved working conditions from their employer, Republic Services, according to CBS News. 

The increased trash pileup has led to a significant increase in rodent populations, said Yankee owner Galvin Murphy, Jr. Murphy said the company’s regular rodent services have increased 75 percent since July 1, with carbon monoxide gas injection services increasing 50 percent.

“I don’t think that residents should suffer in this process,” Murphy said. “The sanitation is dropping and if I can do my part for next to nothing, while doing the right thing for the neighborhood, I don’t think it gets any more American than that.”

Murphy said he was born and raised on the 19^th floor of a high-rise in Boston and understands what it’s like to come from nothing and needing help during times of need.

“Most people are going to suffer from this because they can’t afford to take corrective action,” he said. “It’s important to take care of people living on the other side.”

Murphy’s biggest tip to residents having trash overflow: “Try and secure trash as long as you can, and get it off sight as quickly as [you] can.”
