SCHAUMBURG, Ill. — Zoecon Professional Products has created “A Guided Tour of Your Flea Free Home,” a free brochure that pest management professionals can customize with their contact information and use as a tool in talking with customers.
Fleas continue to be a problem this summer, as irritating, biting nuisances to both humans and pets. “Unfortunately, many homeowners wait until they have a severe flea problem before they contact a pest control professional, and as a result, those accounts may require multiple visits,” says Doug VanGundy, Wellmark International entomologist.
The brochure provides tips to homeowners on how they can keep their homes pest-free. Included in the brochure is a listing of areas where existing fleas can hide indoor as well as the need to control pre-adult fleas, which can account for as much as 99% of an infestation. The brochure also provides homeowners with checklists of specific steps they should take before and after a flea treatment.
Of significant importance is some of the valuable flea biology and behavior information, such as the fact that homeowners may see some adult fleas for up to 3 to 4 weeks following a treatment. This is because flea pupae are protected from insecticides by their cocoons, emerging as adults over a period of 1 to 3 weeks. Once exposed to the insecticide residual, they also will be eliminated. The brochure also advises homeowners to vacuum frequently for 2 to 3 weeks at intervals of 3 to 4 days.
In addition to homeowner tips, the brochure reviews some of the products that pest management professionals use for control, including Precor®, which features the active ingredient methoprene, an insect growth regulator that targets pre-adult fleas. Precor provides odorless control for as long as seven months, and is available in the following formulations:
• Precor Plus, combining two adulticides with an insect growth regulator to kill adult fleas while preventing larval fleas from becoming adults;
• Precor Concentrate, for tank mixing; and
• Precor Fogger to target hard-to-reach areas.
