FDA Seizes Food From Infested Warehouse

2/4/2010

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration says it seized 1,500 cases of food stored under what it calls unsanitary conditions at a warehouse in Ellsworth, Wis.

ELLSWORTH, Wis. — The U.S. Food and Drug Administration says it seized 1,500 cases of food stored under what it calls unsanitary conditions at a warehouse in Ellsworth, Wis.

The FDA says in a news release that the food was seized Tuesday at Mid-States Closeouts, a distribution warehouse, under a warrant issued by a federal court in Wisconsin.

U.S. Marshals seized all FDA-regulated human and animal food susceptible to rodent and pest contamination or other filth.

An FDA inspection in November and December found widespread rodent infestation, including numerous gnawed packages of human and animal food.

However, the agency says it hasn't received any complaints of illness or death associated with food distributed by Mid-States Closeouts.
